A message from Rosendale Town Supervisor Patrick McDonough
It's hard to believe it's been thirty years since the first Rosendale Street Festival. I think what they say about Woodstock is likely true about the first Street Fest; "If you remember it, you probably weren't there." Though I must admit, I do have some vague recollections of those first three glorious years - 1978, 1979 and 1980.
At the time, I was a young man from Kingston enjoying the camaraderie, fun and music in my Dad's home town. By 1980, I was sound man for The James Younger Band (remember them?) and working for them at the festival.
The long hiatus that followed was unfortunate, but the revival of the fest in the 1990's was a welcome treat. Since then, many good people have worked hard to make sure the Rosendale Street Festival remains the cornerstone of our town's festival line-up.
It would be unfair to try and name all the hard working volunteers who kept the fest alive, but I would be remiss if I didn't at least mention Michael Dmoch, whose tireless promotion of local musicians was one of the keys to the resurgence, Jack Walsh, who almost singlehandedly brought the festival back to life, and Charlie Kniceley, the current Chair, who took over the reins and has breathed new life into it. They, along with the Board of Directors, have done an amazing job promoting our community.
Every year dozens and dozens of volunteers work hard at the Street Fest, with very little recognition. For what it's worth, I offer my own deep and humble gratitude to all of you for another fantastic festival. Thanks for helping put Rosendale on the map.
Look for them today as you enjoy your time in Rosendale, and thank them for all they do. They're easy to spot; they're wearing the "Staff" and "Volunteer" t-shirts.
Now let's go have some fun with 25,000 of our closest friends!
